Formerly NotebookLM, Gemini Notebook is designed around the sources a user selects, rather than treating the open web as an unbounded conversation. Its strongest use case is turning a controlled reading pack into an inspectable summary, study guide or research brief.
Product: Gemini Notebook · Developer: Google
At a glance
Good for: students; analysts; educators; document-heavy teams. Known application surfaces: web; supported mobile app with feature differences. Typical inputs and outputs: uploaded documents; web URLs; supported audio and video transcripts; source-grounded answers; study artifacts.
These are product-level descriptions as of the editorial cutoff, not guarantees for every geography, workspace, device or subscription. Specific pricing, usage limits, model builds and enterprise contract terms are deliberately omitted unless independently established for the applicable tier. Current price and usage assumptions require a separately dated plan comparison against the vendor’s terms.
How to use it effectively
Create one notebook for a bounded question, for example a procurement review with an RFP, vendor responses and contractual terms. Label the originals and ask one narrow question at a time: “Which document specifies the warranty exclusions?” Open the supporting passage, compare neighboring context, and record the answer in a separate decision sheet. For complex research, import sources discovered from the web only after checking their issuer and date. Use Studio artifacts such as audio overviews or study materials as learning aids, not as replacements for quotations and the underlying file.
Capabilities and deployment context
Google introduced Project Tailwind under the NotebookLM name in July 2023 and renamed it Gemini Notebook in 2026. Its official documentation lists files, Google Drive sources, websites, certain YouTube transcripts and audio as possible inputs, with limits and client differences. Chat responses refer to the notebook’s sources and provide text citations. This helps users trace an assertion back to a page or segment instead of receiving only a fluent answer.
Practical limitations
A URL import is not the same as a full website crawl: Google states that webpage imports may pull text without embedded images and videos, and paywalled resources may fail. Videos rely on captions; malformed scans, tables and inaccessible Drive links can leave important gaps. Each notebook is its own collection, so content in another notebook is not automatically in scope. If a source changes, check whether the copy or synced Drive version used for the answer is the one you intended.
Privacy, access and portability
The safest workflow uses a minimum necessary set of documents, labels each source with a version and retains originals under the team’s own document controls. Check shared-notebook permissions before distributing the notebook. Exported documents or sheets are separate copies: Google’s help text says they do not automatically synchronize edits back to the notebook and sharing permissions do not necessarily carry over.
Who should choose it instead of an alternative?
Choose Gemini Notebook for fixed corpora, learning packs and auditable source questions. Use Gemini Apps for general open-ended assistance, Perplexity for broad web discovery and Elicit for formal academic screening or extraction. Its product identity remains one canonical record despite the Project Tailwind and NotebookLM aliases.
A sensible first evaluation
- Choose one real but non-sensitive task with a checkable expected outcome.
- Record your account region, active workspace, product mode and evaluation date; do not infer a model version from the brand.
- Compare the response with the original document or primary website, paying particular attention to figures, exclusions and contradictory sources.
- Test how to edit, share, export and delete the result before building a recurring workflow around it.
- Revisit permissions and product release notes before expanding to proprietary information or wider teams.
Vendor documentation update — 25 October 2026
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026; the notebook product continues as a standalone research workspace. This is a dated vendor statement, not an independent product test, endorsement, or confirmation of account-specific availability.
