Minimum Billable Video Units: Why Nine Generated Seconds Can Cost Ten

Generation duration is not always a continuous meter; billing may round to a supported clip length before applying the rate.

Generation duration is not always a continuous meter; billing may round to a supported clip length before applying the rate.

Evidence scope: First-party documentation was checked on 25 October 2026. Published pricing is a scoped list reference, not a guaranteed account quote. Source dates, release dates and the first effective date of a price are not assumed to be interchangeable; geography, plan, currency and invoicing may alter the paid amount.

Rounding begins with the selected mode

Luma’s credit guide explicitly illustrates that nine seconds may be billed as ten. This can happen when a model sells supported output durations or charges through rounded clip increments. A request for nine seconds should not automatically be priced at nine times a one-second equivalent. The budget calculator must capture the product-specific rounding rule in addition to requested and generated duration. Where a provider has not disclosed a minimum, store it as unknown rather than inferring ten seconds universally.

Other systems use different denominators

Midjourney illustrates video cost in GPU minutes for batches of one, two or four videos. Pika illustrates some jobs using credits per fixed sample generation, while other third-party APIs charge per output second. These are structurally different meters: calculating with a single “video credits per second” field across vendors is invalid. A useful schema stores charge unit, clip duration, batch size, quality, model, and any input-reference charges, with the rate’s original currency or proprietary credit unit.

Quantify the impact before scaling

Suppose a hypothetical plan requires 35 nine-second Luma clips on a mode whose billable length rounds to ten seconds. The forecast must buy 350 billable seconds of work, even though requested footage totals only 315. It is not legitimate to multiply those seconds by a different Luma plan’s clip rate. For a five-second-only reference tariff, quote the number of five- or ten-second jobs and the exact credit amount rather than converting it to a pretend continuous rate.

Failed attempts must follow the real refund policy

Whether a failed, moderated or cancelled render incurs credits is provider- and failure-state-specific. Midjourney documents that blocked jobs do not consume credits in its described workflow, but that cannot be copied to Luma or Pika. Your telemetry should classify generated, interrupted, refunded, moderated and accepted attempts. Invoice reconciliation should be based on the completed charge events exposed by the vendor, not only your application’s “success” callback or an estimated render progress bar.

Reproducible rules for a calculator

Represent an increment-based job as billable_units = ceil(requested_duration / increment) × increment only where the vendor explicitly documents that increment. Otherwise use the exact priced job SKUs. Multiply by the original rate and keep separate rows for source images, image upscale, soundtrack and network storage. Do not apply currency conversion without dated FX evidence. This method generalizes without making unsupported claims about any particular video model.

How to verify the actual invoice

Begin with a small representative workload rather than the cheapest published headline. Record the exact provider and billing channel, API model identifier, currency, account geography, plan and commitment length. The price or quota evidence in this guide is keyed to underlying measured vendor events. Do not combine proprietary creative credits, token meters or media seconds into a single currency or invent a conversion rate between them. If an enterprise or regional rate is not published, leave its price unknown and obtain a written quote.

Keep separate estimates for failed attempts, optional tools, storage, exports, human quality review and tax. Use source-verified line items from the companion CSV instead of typing permanent numbers into your forecasting formulas. Where an old plan or model was superseded, preserve its original historical record and create an additive later snapshot. This guide does not claim a product test, performance ranking, independent legal assessment or live procurement approval.

Availability, alternatives and editorial limits

Available plans, supported endpoints, trial eligibility, quota reset and contract rights may vary by region and account even when a public website displays a single global currency. Compare an alternative only with the same accepted task, input/output volume, model version and privacy requirements. Vendor-provided marketing claims are not independent evidence of quality. This historical pricing article may be cross-referenced by the model, media or enterprise procurement team, but its purpose is to explain the billing mechanics without duplicating their evaluations or inventing test scores.
