A marketing team does not just need an attractive image. It needs editable iterations, traceable rights and a repeatable approval process.
Scenario: Commercial illustrations and campaign visuals that may require reference images, editing and final human sign-off.
Scope and cutoff: As of 25 October 2026. Midjourney v8.2 dated July 2026; OpenAI Image API model list current on cutoff; Adobe products and partner models differentiated.
Evidence standard: These are vendor documents, not independent product tests. Unavailable claims are left unknown; plan prices are delegated to the AI 10 dated price ledger.
Evidence matrix
| Option | What is established | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Midjourney v8.2 | Default v8.2 release date and Edit Model workflow are officially documented | Official documentation |
| OpenAI GPT Image API | Current API image-generation and image-editing support with explicitly named models | Official documentation |
| Adobe Firefly | Adobe lists conditions for commercial use and distinguishes partner-model terms | Official documentation |
Control is a workflow, not a single quality score
Midjourney’s own version history identifies v8.2 as its default from 24 July 2026 and describes its newer Edit Model, which can modify existing assets, use reference inputs and edit regions. OpenAI documents text-driven image generation with optional image inputs; its API reference exposes precise model IDs rather than an undifferentiated ‘GPT Image’ label. Adobe distinguishes its Firefly models from partner models for commercial-use guidance. None of these official feature documents supplies a credible independent leaderboard for typography, portrait fidelity or compositional consistency. A team can test those using blinded reviewers and its own brand checklist.
Build a useful side-by-side trial
Create a fixed brief: one hero image in two aspect ratios, one product-on-table edit, one localized campaign graphic with readable text and one reference-character variation. Record exact model or version, input rights, prompt, seed when supported, iterations, retouching time and final asset approval. Review whether the tool preserves the product’s true geometry and whether a generated logo accidentally imitates a real company. Check typography by manually reading the exported raster; apparently plausible lettering is not reliable evidence of correct text.
Rights require more than a vendor slogan
Adobe describes particular Firefly offerings as commercially usable and instructs users to review terms for partner models. Those statements are product policies with conditions, not a universal guarantee against third-party rights complaints. Source photos, trademarks, distinctive characters and real people’s likenesses introduce separate clearance duties. Maintain a provenance sheet for every exported asset, including the human authorizer and the license for each uploaded reference. Do not present generated character images as photographs of a real event.
Budget the complete asset
Compare the price of accepted deliverables, not only the sticker cost per generation. A procurement model should include paid credits, failed attempts, staff retouching time, legal review, storage and re-export. API and app quotas are separate products; do not conflate them. The model/version and plan need to be checked again immediately before production because both capability and access can change. The related AI 10 price snapshot, not this editorial guide, is the correct location for current rates.
What the decision depends on
Select the editing workflow and rights review your team can actually operate; aesthetic superiority must be established by your own controlled production samples.
Buyer verification checklist
- Which exact model and version produced the output?
- Can a human make targeted revisions?
- Are uploaded references licensed?
- Can reviewers reproduce or at least audit the generation settings?
What remains unknown
No independent hands-on scores, standardized ratings, guarantees of region-wide availability or current billable price comparisons are established here. Country, tier, device and actual contractual controls must be verified for the intended purchase.
