Release context

Inpainting results often fail for reasons unrelated to the image generator: a mask excludes the correct shadow, an alpha channel is lost, or a reference photograph was resized differently from its mask. The Meta Segment Anything project provides an interactive way to select objects, while the ComfyUI maintainers document explicit inpainting and outpainting workflows. These are separate tools with separate roles. A reliable production handoff preserves that separation instead of referring to the entire pipeline as one model.

How the image workflow actually works

Define four versioned artifacts: original source pixels, selection mask, model input bundle and generated candidate output. A mask should share the source’s coordinate system and be inspected both as an overlay and as a monochrome image. Export formats can premultiply alpha or flatten transparency; a file that looks correct in one editor may select the wrong pixels in another. Before any generative fill, check what the white and black mask values mean for that exact pipeline.

A practical production example

For an authorized product photograph, remove a background stand without changing the actual object. Prepare the mask in a segmentation tool, refine thin edges, then pass it into a documented inpainting graph. Save the graph definition or a pointer to the exact historical revision, seed and model hash. Judge both the untouched-object comparison and the plausibility of the reconstructed floor. A replacement that changes the product silhouette is rejected even if the background looks realistic.

A concrete quality-control test

The strongest failure test intentionally checks a tricky region such as a transparent bottle, textured hair or a cast shadow. Inspect the source, proposed mask, masked preview and final output side by side. Confirm that masks retain their intended pixel dimensions after any resize and that feathering has not changed the product silhouette. If a model invents unseen content behind an object, that output should be marked synthetic. Freeze the ComfyUI workflow graph and every custom-node dependency before handing it to a colleague; otherwise a successful demonstration is not yet a reproducible pipeline.

Limitations and rights checks

The referenced ComfyUI examples are living GitHub documentation, so the precise node versions and current API behavior require a frozen commit before declaring a production-ready recipe. A documented mask workflow does not grant permission to upload any image, nor does it ensure that models protect private imagery. Generated pixels should not be presented as originally photographed evidence. Hardware needs and elapsed times are not measured here.

When to choose this approach

Use a two-tool handoff when localized editing and auditability matter. For highly sensitive visual evidence, use reversible human retouching or leave the source unchanged and explain the limitation.

Implementation and acceptance checklist

  1. Check original ownership and write-protect the source file.
  2. Export and visually inspect a mask in the target coordinates.
  3. Pin the inpainting model and node-graph revision.
  4. Review generated pixels and protected regions independently.
  5. Retain before/after, mask, settings and approval trail.

Access, costs and dated applicability

Dates and capabilities refer to the documented release or method identified above, not to every later version. This archive does not assert current region-specific access, account-tier inclusion, credit usage, exact API pricing or a definitive commercial-use permission. Those fields remain unresolved until authoritative, cutoff-matched plan and rights material is attached by AI 10 and editorial/legal review. No images were generated or tested for this article.
