Inpainting creates new content inside a chosen area. It is one of the highest-value visual AI techniques because a team can revise one objectionable object without discarding an otherwise approved composition. The mask, however, is not a contractual promise that everything outside it stays identical.
Choose the correct tool and mask
Adobe Firefly uses a brush-selected region; Ideogram Canvas calls its regional operation Magic Fill; ComfyUI has explicit mask-based graph examples. They share a concept but use different editors and underlying models. Before editing, duplicate the source and mark the specific objects to be changed. Include enough surrounding context for shadows and material transitions, but do not carelessly cover important logos or readable type.
Write a precise local instruction
A good edit prompt describes the replacement and invariants. For example: “Replace the chipped blue vase with a plain white ceramic vase of identical approximate size; keep shelf position, lighting, background books and camera perspective.” Requesting “make it better” provides no testable criterion. For ComfyUI, the selected checkpoint and denoise settings matter; in a hosted tool the model may still change nearby pixels. Verify what actually changed with an overlay or image-difference view.
Review the seam and semantics
Check boundary artifacts, directional light, cast shadows, overlapping arms and objects, reflections and perspective. Then check meaning: did the model add a certificate, depict a person who was never present or quietly alter a product feature? A believable image can be a worse record of reality. For news, science and documentary visuals, clearly distinguish a synthetic reconstruction from the original evidence.
Stop conditions and handoff
Use a predefined maximum number of attempts, rather than refining indefinitely toward a subjectively pleasing result. Keep before/after files and reviewer approval. When the needed change is precise typography, use conventional retouching or compositing. For pricing comparisons, collect real image-generation counts and operations by product and pass the measurements to AI 10; do not estimate them as universal costs.
Worked scenario and failure test
A photographer is asked to remove a bright red bin from an otherwise approved park scene. Mask the bin and a small area around its shadow, supply a positive replacement instruction such as ‘continuous stone path with matching morning light,’ and save the result. Review the exact boundary and check that people, tree trunks and pavement geometry were not changed. If the platform has changed a person or moved a path, reject the generation even if the image looks more attractive. A second pass should target only a demonstrated defect, not a vague desire for perfection.
Decision guide and practical handoff
Accept an inpaint only after pixel-level and meaning-level review. A responsible review packet names the exact source or model version, the permitted input assets, the requested operation and the image characteristics a reviewer must check. It should also contain an unaltered reference, the accepted derivative, and a short record of what changed. A supported feature is not necessarily a reliable one for every brief, and the team must approve both technical appearance and real-world truthfulness before distribution.
Availability, price and geographic limitations
Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Release dates and historical tier details above are explicitly dated. Unless independently confirmed for a named country and account tier, current availability, billing currency, credit consumption, API quota and commercial entitlement are unknown—not universal. Consult official regional terms and AI 10’s dated price snapshots before procurement; do not treat a historical announcement as a live entitlement. No application, model, API response or image output was hands-on tested for this article.
