ComfyUI is a graphical node workflow environment. It is not itself a single image model: the model weights, conditioning and mask determine what can be generated. This distinction matters for reproducibility, licensing and security.
Understand the graph
The ComfyUI project’s official example repository demonstrates an inpaint workflow using a mask and a compatible checkpoint. It documents a built-in MaskEditor and a Pad Image for Outpainting node. Inpainting changes content inside a region; outpainting pads the canvas and generates around it. Neither technique should be confused with cropping or ordinary interpolation, which manipulate known pixels without imagining new subject matter.
A practical implementation recipe
Begin with a cleared input image and model file. Load the image and mask; use a matching text encoder and sampler; decode the result; save it with workflow metadata when supported. For outpainting, extend the canvas and generate a mask for new space. Review the mask itself before running inference. Keep the source image separate from generated outputs so accidental overwrites cannot destroy the baseline.
Record more than the prompt
The same words can produce different outputs when checkpoint hashes, VAE, sampler, step count, denoise strength, hardware libraries or custom nodes change. Save a sanitized workflow JSON, extension versions, model licenses and random seed alongside the selected image. Avoid distributing user-supplied source files inside publicly shared workflow metadata. Treat downloaded community nodes as code with security implications, not harmless styles.
Where local control helps—and does not
A local workflow can reduce the need to upload sensitive prototypes and support repeated batch processing, but can also require substantial memory, operational knowledge and maintenance. It does not automatically grant commercial use of every checkpoint, LoRA or reference asset. If the underlying model was licensed for non-commercial use, placing it inside a node editor does not remove that restriction.
Worked scenario and failure test
In a locked-down design lab, a technician must replace a damaged illustration background without uploading the confidential drawing. Document the local checkpoint and plug-in versions, load the image and mask, and generate from a fixed graph. The QA operator compares the output with the unchanged baseline and checks that unmasked proprietary marks remain intact. Export the workflow JSON after removing file paths and embedded sensitive data. The fact that a node graph runs locally does not guarantee that the model used by that graph permits commercial use or that community-provided nodes are secure.
Decision guide and practical handoff
Preserve model hash, graph and inputs; verify each installed model/node license. A responsible review packet names the exact source or model version, the permitted input assets, the requested operation and the image characteristics a reviewer must check. It should also contain an unaltered reference, the accepted derivative, and a short record of what changed. A supported feature is not necessarily a reliable one for every brief, and the team must approve both technical appearance and real-world truthfulness before distribution.
Availability, price and geographic limitations
Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Release dates and historical tier details above are explicitly dated. Unless independently confirmed for a named country and account tier, current availability, billing currency, credit consumption, API quota and commercial entitlement are unknown—not universal. Consult official regional terms and AI 10’s dated price snapshots before procurement; do not treat a historical announcement as a live entitlement. No application, model, API response or image output was hands-on tested for this article.
Reference-image and rights boundary
The described ComfyUI workflow (inpaint/outpaint workflows) is based on documentary source material, not an independently generated portfolio or test. A reviewer should compare the exact version and reference controls in the intended interface and clear the rights to every uploaded photo, likeness, logo and final asset. Do not infer guaranteed visual consistency, commercial permission or worldwide availability from a product feature page.
