A provider’s geographic label is not a full data-flow map. Input processing, model serving, caching, moderation, abuse logs, embeddings, retrieval stores, backups and support access may follow different paths. A procurement team should describe where each category of information is processed and held, rather than asking only whether “the API is in the EU.”
Understand routing profiles
AWS documents geographic cross-Region inference profiles for broad areas such as EU, US and APAC. Requests can be served in multiple allowed regions within that geography; this differs from a single-region residency guarantee. AWS also offers other routing choices, so the exact inference profile identifier and permissions matter. Verify destination-region sets at deployment time.
The data inventory
Classify prompts, attachments, generated output, logs, telemetry, cache states, fine-tuning datasets and vector indexes separately. A signed DPA does not automatically prove that every tool connector, partner cloud and backup region matches organizational requirements. Record purpose, retention, operator access and deletion controls for each flow.
Deployments differ by channel
A model from the same provider may be available through its native API, a hyperscaler and a local open-weight stack. Each has different encryption, networking, quotas, subprocessor terms and model update rules. It is a mistake to cite a provider-level privacy page to claim compliance for every partner deployment.
Governance checkpoint
Before production, test regional failover, access revocation, audit-log visibility and deletion requests. Have a qualified legal/compliance owner review applicable regulations. This editorial guide offers a verification workflow, not an assurance that any named vendor is compliant with a particular law.
What to verify before adopting this model or method
Use the exact release ID and API endpoint; confirm your geographic processing location, entitlement tier, model lifecycle, feature flags, context and output limits from the provider console. Run a reproducible evaluation on your own data and retain human oversight for consequential actions. Where a specification, price, commercial license or entitlement is not verified for your deployment, this article deliberately leaves it unasserted instead of filling a plausible number.
