Midjourney V6 and V6.1: Character References Before Omni Reference

Midjourney’s V6-era controls are often misremembered because later versions replaced them. Character Reference in V6 is not equivalent to V7 Omni Reference or V8.2 Edit Model.

Pin the version before explaining a feature

Midjourney’s official chronology dates V6 to 20 December 2023 and V6.1 to 30 July 2024. The document describes improved prompt interpretation and details as model-generation changes. Its legacy documentation confirms Character Reference was available for V6 and Niji 6, with `–cref` and optional character-weight `–cw`. It also states this feature was replaced by Omni Reference in V7 and the Edit Model in V8.X. Do not use current interface behavior as evidence of the old parameter’s compatibility in a later release.

Character similarity is not identity proof

A character-reference image may help repeat an invented cartoon protagonist’s traits across scenes, but wardrobe, accessories and facial details can drift. A similarity feature does not establish consent to depict a real person, and it cannot guarantee exact reconstruction. Prepare a character sheet with lawful references, approved distinctive features and a list of prohibited changes. Review several outputs at thumbnail and full resolution, checking emblem placement, color continuity, anatomy and duplicate limbs.

A safe sequential illustration process

For a three-panel original fairy tale, create a fictional explorer whose visual identity is not based on a real child or celebrity. Keep a character sheet, scene-by-scene prompt descriptions and reference provenance. Generate test frames with consistent lens language and palette; check character appearance against the sheet. If the model changes the costume or introduces an incorrect emblem, regenerate or manually fix it, then save the accepted frame. For exact production continuity, editable character rigs or illustration layers offer more deterministic control.

Distinguish style and subject references

Style Reference guides overall visual treatment, while a V6 Character Reference aims at recurring character traits. An image prompt can influence composition without guaranteeing either outcome. The selection of control is a creative decision tied to model support; adding all references indiscriminately can create conflicts. Record the actual `–v` value and parameters. A job that switches to V7 or V8 must have its prompt and reference logic revalidated instead of blindly copying historic syntax.

Rights and access limits

Midjourney’s living documentation gives strong version chronology but does not freeze an October 2026 snapshot of every usage term. Commercial permission, privacy and plan-based visibility are separate contract questions. Historical V6-era instructions can be preserved for education, but new deployments should consult the currently supported version. This article has not run Midjourney or assessed image consistency quantitatively.

Verification and approval checklist

Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. The dated first-party releases below support the historical capabilities described here; no independent output or application test was performed. Before a live deployment, verify the exact model or interface version, permitted references, commercial license and data-handling terms for the intended region and account. Do not assume a historical launch proves a present-day price, usage allowance, endpoint, export right or support status. Those unresolved fields remain with AI 10, AI 11 and the shared-data QA team. Keep the original prompt and inputs, the selected output, the rejected variants and the person responsible for final image, copy and rights approval.
