Midjourney V7 in 2025: Draft Mode, Omni Reference and Their Limits

The 2025 V7 transition brought two especially important creative controls: faster experimentation in Draft Mode and subject-guided generation through Omni Reference.

The 2025 V7 transition brought two especially important creative controls: faster experimentation in Draft Mode and subject-guided generation through Omni Reference.

Chronology before features

Midjourney’s official version reference dates V7 to 3 April 2025 and records its later default-model period separately. It identifies Draft Mode and Omni Reference as V7 introductions. This chronology should not be confused with V8.X’s subsequent Edit Model. Users reading old prompts need to know whether a parameter was tested in V7 or in a newer editing environment, since migration can change both look and allowed controls.

What Omni Reference attempts

The documentation describes Omni Reference as a way to bring a person, fictional character, creature, vehicle or object from a source image into a new generated scene. It is different from reference-based background replacement that preserves exact original pixels. A supplied reference can guide the scene, yet may alter logos, facial structure, clothing fasteners or object dimensions. This is why a studio should distinguish fictional-character continuity from verified identity preservation and require informed permission for real people.

Plan Draft Mode as exploration

A creator can use a draft sequence to compare camera angle, subject placement and silhouette before committing to a final composition. The acceptance test should ask whether the frame communicates the scene at thumbnail size and has the right negative space for a headline. Once a concept is chosen, regenerate and inspect the intended final image rather than assuming the fastest draft is production-quality. Retain the version identifier with prompts and approved frames.

Compatibility and real cost exposure

The Omni Reference documentation says V7 references have feature-combination limitations, including workflows involving older inpainting/outpainting paths. It also mentions different GPU-time behavior. Because documentation is living and later V8 instructions appear alongside historical V7 notes, an October 2026 editorial record cannot safely claim every old behavior still applies to every UI. Price and GPU-time allowance belong to AI 10’s dated plan records, not a fixed number in this article.

Work through a controlled example

Proposed brief: A fictional expedition character appearing in several environments with shared costume and silhouette. Start by documenting the intended audience, target output dimensions, allowed input files and elements that must not change. Produce an initial set of candidates using only assets with cleared use rights. Label the selected version and retain rejected options; write down whether failures involved composition, incorrect text, subject drift, missing objects or insufficient detail. The procedure is a recommended evaluation protocol, not a description of a test this publication performed.

Common failure and human approval gate

Main failure to prevent: Confusing aesthetic similarity with exact likeness, or mixing V7 Omni with V8 editing instructions. Before acceptance, review the image at the actual delivery crop and at full resolution. Compare all text against approved copy and all product, face and brand details against authorized originals. Do not rely on generated charts or signs for factual assertions. Record the approver, revisions and rights sources. A better-looking variation does not automatically satisfy legal, historical or accessibility requirements.

How to decide and what remains unknown

Choose Draft for selection and Omni for subject guidance; use a traditional editor when pixels must remain exact. Alternatives depend on which constraint is most important: a deterministic vector editor for exact layout and trademarks, a masked editor for localized edits, a reference-guided generator for style or subject guidance, and a conventional photo workflow for documentary authenticity. Use a version-specific trial only after confirming that the chosen account actually offers the feature. No hands-on model, product or API tests were performed for this report.

Research cutoff, current availability and rights

Research cutoff and documentary check: 25 October 2026. Historical first-party material below supports the described release events and vendor-advertised operations only. The article does not establish current region-by-region availability, enterprise data retention, accessibility certification, API service levels, commercial usage rights or price. These fields remain null until independently checked for a named plan and geography, with AI 10 providing a dated cost identifier and AI 11 reviewing rights and safety claims. Rights to uploaded people, photographs, trademarks and artwork require separate clearance. The tool is not a substitute for final editorial approval.
