Midjourney is best understood as a versioned image workflow, not a timeless collection of commands. V7 introduced Omni Reference; by July 2026, V8.2 had become the default and its Edit Model used a different reference and editing path.
A short historical map
Midjourney’s official version page dates V7 to 3 April 2025, V8.1 to 14 April 2026 and the default V8.2 release to 24 July 2026. V7 is associated with Draft Mode and Omni Reference. V8.2’s newer Edit Model supersedes earlier Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture approaches. An old tutorial saying to use –cref or –oref may make sense for a historical version but should not be presented as the default workflow for V8.2.
References are not identity locks
The V7 Omni Reference help page says it can guide characters and objects from one image, and warns that small details or logos may not match. It also describes incompatibilities with some editing operations and extra GPU time for that version. The V8 Edit Model documentation instead discusses up to four supplied references, prompt-based edits, masking and canvas expansion. These capabilities should be attributed to their respective versions, not combined in an imaginary universal feature set.
Commercial and public visibility risks
Midjourney’s historical April 2025 terms allocate substantial responsibility to the user for uploaded images, third-party rights and consent. They distinguish ownership under the service contract from the copyright rights a jurisdiction actually recognizes. Public or community generations may be visible, so do not use confidential brand assets or unconsented portraits until the relevant plan and privacy settings have been checked. A 2025 rule must not be asserted automatically as the legal wording for October 2026.
How to document a repeatable brief
Record exact model version, reference image source, reference type, aspect ratio and prompt. Produce a baseline illustration, then one subject-consistency variant and one composition variant. Compare the same four visual anchors in each: subject silhouette, costume details, color hierarchy and background geometry. If an asset requires a precisely placed trademark, composite a licensed original vector afterward. Save a local audit copy because vendor defaults can change.
Worked scenario and failure test
Suppose an illustrator owns a reference of a fictional astronaut and must produce four scenes. For a historical V7 replication, record the V7 model and Omni Reference settings; for a V8.2 production, start afresh using its Edit Model. Compare helmet markings, body proportions and eye color rather than merely asking whether the character feels familiar. Do not promise that the V7 Omni Reference output can be edited through the same inpainting path or consumed at the same GPU rate as V8. The publisher should retain a source-and-version audit even if the final art is visually similar.
Decision guide and practical handoff
Use the V8 Edit Model for V8.2 tasks; annotate any V7 Omni Reference examples as historical. A responsible review packet names the exact source or model version, the permitted input assets, the requested operation and the image characteristics a reviewer must check. It should also contain an unaltered reference, the accepted derivative, and a short record of what changed. A supported feature is not necessarily a reliable one for every brief, and the team must approve both technical appearance and real-world truthfulness before distribution.
Availability, price and geographic limitations
Research cutoff: 25 October 2026. Release dates and historical tier details above are explicitly dated. Unless independently confirmed for a named country and account tier, current availability, billing currency, credit consumption, API quota and commercial entitlement are unknown—not universal. Consult official regional terms and AI 10’s dated price snapshots before procurement; do not treat a historical announcement as a live entitlement. No application, model, API response or image output was hands-on tested for this article.
Reference-image and rights boundary
The described Midjourney workflow (V7 / V8.1 / V8.2) is based on documentary source material, not an independently generated portfolio or test. A reviewer should compare the exact version and reference controls in the intended interface and clear the rights to every uploaded photo, likeness, logo and final asset. Do not infer guaranteed visual consistency, commercial permission or worldwide availability from a product feature page.
Confirmed model-boundary clarification
The live Midjourney version and reference pages distinguish V7 Omni Reference from the V8.1/V8.2 Edit Model. Version 8.2 was listed as default on 24 July 2026, and its Edit Model can use up to four images. Documentation on versioned controls is not evidence of pixel-accurate identity retention, regional access or an enterprise rights clearance; test those separately for the intended output.
