Claude 4.6 Long Context: Beta Windows, Pinned IDs and Practical Limits

Claude Opus 4.6 arrived on 5 February 2026, and Sonnet 4.6 followed on 17 February. Both announcements described access to one-million-token context in beta. That qualification matters: a beta allowance is not an unconditional, always-on guarantee across all APIs, tiers and geographies. Older models should not inherit this headline capability because they share the Claude name.

Long window, short answer

A context window limits material supplied to the model; an output limit separately constrains how much it can return. Documentation may change those limits after launch. For a long litigation corpus or code repository, measure retrieval of evidence from the beginning, middle and end, and challenge the model with near-duplicate passages. More context can increase cost, latency and distractibility. External retrieval with narrow evidence spans may still be better.

Pinned IDs and clouds

The Claude API uses claude-opus-4-6 and claude-sonnet-4-6 as fixed release identifiers under the newer naming policy. Before 4.6, many snapshots ended with dates. Cloud vendors may use deployment-specific identifiers; the identical marketing name does not promise identical provisioning or access to beta features. Preserve provider and platform namespaces in the release index.

Preview operations

Before long-context production, test timeout behavior, processing cost, input token counting, prompt-caching eligibility, streaming interruptions and retry safety. Record the actual environment when a beta feature works. A long system prompt can reduce the room for user documents; reserve a budget for tool messages and final answer tokens as well.

Model choice

Opus 4.6 was launched for high-complexity work; Sonnet 4.6 offers a different trade-off. Compare both on representative documents under the same constraints. For confidential records, have a governance owner review retention and processing locations rather than assuming a “long context” label implies any particular privacy posture.

Minimal Anthropic Messages request

This illustrative HTTP request follows the provider documentation as reviewed at cutoff. The key must be set securely in the local environment and the specified model must be enabled for the account. We have not executed it, measured latency or confirmed a particular tenant entitlement. The bearer key is a placeholder environment variable, not an embedded secret.

curl https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer $ANTHROPIC_API_KEY'
  -H 'anthropic-version: 2026-10-21'
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json'
  -d '{"model":"claude-sonnet-4-6","max_tokens":256,"messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Summarize this sample document."}]}'

Consult the official endpoint documentation for currently supported authentication and headers.

What to verify before adopting this model or method

Use the exact release ID and API endpoint; confirm your geographic processing location, entitlement tier, model lifecycle, feature flags, context and output limits from the provider console. Run a reproducible evaluation on your own data and retain human oversight for consequential actions. Where a specification, price, commercial license or entitlement is not verified for your deployment, this article deliberately leaves it unasserted instead of filling a plausible number.

Documentation clarification (25 October 2026)

Anthropic’s versioning reference says dateless 4.6-generation IDs are pinned releases, not moving aliases. This statement does not automatically apply to every earlier Claude nickname.

Sources & Further Reading

Source documentation establishes vendor-published facts, not independently measured model quality, tenant access, contractual rights or current prices. Use a dated pricing ledger and an account-specific entitlement check for deployment decisions.
