Midjourney prompt archives can remain valuable, but copying a V6 prompt into V8.2 and expecting the same character, edit path and texture is not a valid reproducibility guarantee. The official version history enables a more honest migration map.

Anchor the timeline first
Midjourney lists V6 as released 20 December 2023, V6.1 on 30 July 2024, V7 on 3 April 2025, V8.0 alpha on 17 March 2026, V8.1 on 14 April 2026 and V8.2 as the default beginning 24 July 2026. Release and default dates differ. A stored image made in a transition month may not have used the new default. Preserve the explicit model/version parameter, seed when available, prompt and any reference assets in the job’s record.
Why old prompts diverge
Midjourney’s V7 introduced Draft Mode and Omni Reference, while the V8.2 page describes the new Edit Model replacing older editing references and tools. That is a material workflow change, not only an aesthetic upgrade. Old guides that say “use Omni Reference” may no longer describe the current V8.2 edit path. The vendor’s compatibility chart also distinguishes aspects such as upscaling, image resolution and pan/edit behavior by generation. Verify a feature against its version column before issuing instructions.
A migration plan for an existing library
First classify work as immutable archival artwork, reusable prompt templates or editable masters. For immutable work, retain the original output with its metadata rather than re-rendering. For reusable templates, create a comparison set containing a consistent subject, camera description and reference image rights. For editable masters, preserve an original layered composition outside the generator so a model migration cannot make text, logos or masks irrecoverable.
Test one change at a time
When recreating an asset, record all prompt terms, aspect ratios, references and image edits. Change only the model version, then compare composition, geometry, typography and subject consistency. Repeat with the updated editing interface rather than trying to compensate for every difference in a single rewritten prompt. Side-by-side review by the asset owner is more informative than a pooled “quality score” across unrelated artistic styles. This article describes a protocol; no test portfolio was executed.
Commercial and operational caveats
A version’s existence does not establish that all plans can access it today or that an older model is still selectable. Midjourney can modify access and feature availability, and its terms impose conditions on asset use. Save the applicable agreement, tier and generation date for campaign audit. Do not attribute V8.2 editing features to V6 materials; retain historic screenshots only if separately licensed and clearly marked as old.
Recommendation
Migrate creative templates selectively, not in a bulk “upgrade all” process. Treat each legacy version as a snapshot with distinct controls. If exact visual consistency is essential, protect the original approved asset and use conventional image editing for minor corrections. For new work, verify current V8.2 capabilities and keep the completed campaign’s sources, approvals and exports in a vendor-independent repository.
